Coicís Chóirthradála / Fairtrade Fortnight

3rd Mar 2020

Ghlac baill dár gComhairle Scoile páirt in imeacht faoi Chóirthradáil a bhí eagraithe ag Comhairle an Iúir, an Mhúirn agus an Dúin inniu.

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight Newry, Mourne & Down District Council held a schools event today in Newry, where they hosted a Fairtrade Farmer, Hugo Javier Guerrero, from Peru. Hugo and his siblings were able to attend school thanks to the Fair trade Foundation. After winning a scholarship to attend university in Lima, Hugo now works in his local Fairtrade Cooperative, helping them develop new and improved methods of coffee production. Today he spoke to the students to explain first hand the difference Fair trade has made to his life and that of his community.

Dr. Christopher Stange, Consul General for St. Vincent & the Grenadines, also spoke about the importance of Fairtrade in the developing world and how we in Ireland can help. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have achieved Fair Trade Council Status. We were among the first primary schools in the district to achieve the “FairAware” status.
